Comic Conceit

Amid mounting speculation that Syria and other forces have been quietly orchestrating the riots and violence surrounding the infamous Danish cartoon of Mohammed, it's worth considering that history is full of imagery - both serious and satirical - of the prophet.

Check out this gallery of images of Mohammed, from medieval paintings to modern comic books. Among them is this 2002 editorial cartoon by Doug Marlette whose work is syndicated in hundreds of newspapers worldwide.

Where was the outrage then? Granted, newspapers did get a few thousand Emails from angry readers but there certainly wasn't rioting in the streets or the burning of U.S. embassies.
